Gandhi’s thoughts
It took a movie like Munnabhai to stir us out of our slumber and take a look at the ideals of Gandhiji. In 2006, it was Sanjay Dutt who was instrumental in enforcing the values of Bapu. Cut to 2010, his sister Priya Dutt and Member of Parliament has taken it upon herself to propel the ideals of Gandhiji.
“In the present day, Gandhian philosophy is restricted to much older people,” said Priya Dutt who was in Delhi to launch an online competition Gandhi and Sport Gen 2010.
An initiative by Youth4Gandhi foundation, the contest is a way to encourage Gandhian ideals among school children. “The youth of Delhi will be using their creativity and multimedia skills to come up with short films, animation, illustrations, jingles and paintings to express their ideas,” said Jahnavi Prasad, founder, Youth4Gandhi. The campaign invites students to blend sports with the teachings of Gandhiji. “I feel sport is a very good medium for peace,” stressed Prasad.
Prasad is expecting the participation of 1000 children in the initiative which is open to children from six to 17 years. Till now, a total of 40 schools have signed up for the campaign. The online entries can be submitted at youth4gandhi.org and will close on September 15.
36 children will be given prizes and the best entry will be conferred with the Youth4Gandhi Icon of the Year 2010 award. In its first outing, the contest will be restricted to the children in Delhi.
Dutt, who will be judging the entries said: “I would judge the entries on the thinking which has gone into them. I will basically try to gather knowledge about the thought process of the child.”
